Detectives Briscoe and Curtis investigate the death of a recently adopted baby who the parents say fell out of her crib. When the police search their apartment, they find another child, their 7-ear old son, Nicholas Waring. The detectives subsequently find that he was severely abused before he was adopted by the Warings and that he could possibly be a sociopath. Recently transferred ADA Abbie Carmichael takes charge of the case, intent on finding what exactly happened. The investigation leads to a Russian baby broker who was finding homes for sick children and to an American couple who got rid of the baby as soon as they found out how ill she was.
